I have three basic ways in
which I work with clients:
Ad Hoc Basis
My hourly rate is $150. This is for short-term projects or for clients who
are not yet interested in an ongoing commitment. An advance of $750 is paid
initially which covers the first five hours of my work for you. This fee is
required of all clients requiring consulting services before any significant
ideas are shared. I believe that a moment of inspiration can be worth a
lifetime of toil, therefore I try to avoid giving my ideas away. This
advance can easily be applied to the retainer rate or a project should we
end up going in that direction—but this is a non-refundable fee.
Extended Term Agreement
Clients who agree to a minimum term of three months and a minimum monthly
retainer of $2,000 are billed at the reduced rate of $100 per hour against
the retainer. With this example, a client would be guaranteed that a minimum
of 20 hours per month is reserved for them.
Project Basis
This is most often for a finite creative assignment, like a new direct mail
package or magazine ad. A set fee is agreed upon at the beginning of the
project. Usually half is paid initially and the remaining fee is due upon
completion. I often reduce the set fee in exchange for a royalty arrangement
(a success fee) based on, for example, the number of pieces mailed after the
initial test.
